Welcome to the Claiborne County School District Office of Curriculum and Instruction. It is our desire to provide leadership and support for teachers, administrators and parents in the areas of curriculum and instruction that will help in the successful achievement of all our students.

The relationship between curriculum and instruction is a close one. Curriculum is a roadmap for learning, and instruction is the vehicle used to get where we want to go. In order to meet the needs of the 21st century learner, we are committed to employing methods that blend thinking and innovation, while integrating research-proven teaching strategies with modern learning technologies in real world contexts. Materials and resources are provided for teachers to insure success for all students.

The CCSD offers a rich, stimulating curriculum for all students based on the Mississippi Curriculum Frameworks. It is our goal to provide all students an outstanding education that cultivates the skills needed to graduate from high school and be fully prepared for college or the work force.

Mississippi is in the process of implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). To date, the CCSS have been adopted by 46 states and the District of Columbia. The Common Core State Standards were developed by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. Common standards will help ensure that students are receiving a high quality education consistently, from school to school and state to state. A major focus of the Claiborne County School District for the next year will be a greater implementation of the CCSS, while fulfilling the requirements under the Mississippi Curriculum Framework. During the 2012-2013 school year, the CCSD fully implemented both the Mathematics and English/Language Arts CCSS in kindergarten through second grade. Additionally, teachers in grades 3 – 8 began transitioning to the CCSS during the 2012-2013 academic year. Training and awareness sessions will be provided for teachers in grades 9 – 12, with a moderate level of implementation.

The CCSD will continue to offer training and support to all teachers and administrators in grades K-12 as we move to full implementation of the Common Core State Standards by the 2014-2015 school year. Please visit the links available to learn more about the Common Core State Standards and the implementation timeline for the State of Mississippi.

This is an exciting time in our district and the state of Mississippi. The CCSS will bring increased rigor and complexity to our curriculum whereby we anticipate a deeper understanding of content through application of knowledge. The CCSS will allow students to delve deeper into fewer standards thus creating an atmosphere that fosters true learning and understanding of skills and concepts.

Again, it is the desire of the Office of Curriculum and Instruction to serve as a positive support system for all stake holders in the Claiborne County School District. Please contact us if we may be of assistance.
